As part of the brand-new, What on Earth is this Company Thinking? series, let’s examine what’s going down at JCrew. I’m not a handbag connoisseur nor do I carry a handbag. I’ve never spent any time looking at handbags for the sake of looking at handbags but my friend sent me a link to the new JCrew Oslo Bag and I thought hey, this is crazy.
$425, for a bag from JCrew.
Visit any retail JCrew and it’s pretty clear that Drexler wants to make JCrew the new Coach. The New Yorker said it too. JCrew always had a problem with being Gap’s New England dwelling cousin in plaid and duck-shoes so its nice that JCrew is trying to carve something different. It’s not a bad plan but lets not kid ourselves. Who is on earth is going to buy this bag?
