I saw the midnight IMAX of the Dark Knight returns last night. I am thoroughly exhausted right now but it was completely worth it.
The movie is spectacular.
It’s an epic experience that is somewhere between Heat and Godfather II and I want to see it again, immediately. Christopher Nolan has written and directed a movie that doesn’t merely service the genre of comic books but squarely in the genre of thrillers. It’s easily the best Batman and comic book movie ever made but also a thriller in the ranks of Michael Mann, Syriana, the Constant Gardner and like.
While moments of the film are lighthearted, the seriousness of the issues is never lost to the viewer. Almost immediately, the velocity of the movie hits from all angles to create an experience of breathtaking imagery and sequences that are beautifully dark yet strangely and emotive.
A certain sort of insane beauty exists as the Joker’s madness becomes increasingly twisted and frightening. Ledger is a standout performance that doesn’t merely fill a character but transcends the ethos of the Joker in a terrifying way. The degrading makeup, the knifed smile, the tongue smacking mannerisms make the performance scarily good. Also, Harvey Dent is equally dramatic.
Many of the elements in the Dark Knight are based on the graphic novels The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween but expanded upon by Nolan. Even though Nolan does not use the literal stories from the graphic novels, he absolutely captures the tragedy and the dark motives of the Joker, the peril of being Harvey Dent and burden of being Batman.
This movie is going to be in my top 5 for 2008, maybe top 3. I am going to rewatch the movie and reread The Killing Joke and The Long Halloween this weekend. I’m just stunned this was so good.
