A long time ago when Apple started developing software and technologies that seemed disparate and random, there was a lot of criticism as to the futile nature of developing software that already existed. The Safari web browser platform was a particular case of “is this really necessary?” since Apple was so reliant on Microsoft to provide Internet Explorer and it seemed like a lot of work for a sluggish browser. Years of R&D later this is what you get. A port of Safari to the iPhone mobile platform and it’s ability to render Javascript and HTML that flogs competitive browsers. This is just embarrassing to Blackberry. Sure BB had to brew it’s own browser but those investments Apple made years ago on Safari are coming back in spades. Big spades.
Make no mistake, this took incredible vision, huge R&D but this video truly sums up what Apple is doing to mobile. Walking into the market and trouncing competitors.

Some people have asked, “are you going to get the 3G iPhone?” Others have asked, “why do you need to upgrade in less than a year?” Well, this is what Nerd Planning is all about. Justifying, budgeting and organizing the purchase of unnecessary gadgets. I kid, however, the iPhone is not quite like anything else.
I will almost certainly get a 3G iPhone. I don’t know if it will be day one but it will be relatively around the launch date. Let me explain why.
My current iPhone was purchased in July 2007 and I ended up upgrading from the 4GB to 8GB model. It’s been almost a year and the iPhone has been the best iPod I’ve ever owned and the best phone I’ve ever owned. It’s better than the Palm Pilot I used to own and miles better than carrying a combination of phone in one pocket and an iPod in the other. For those two devices to become seamlessly one is easily worth the price.
The other kit in the iPhone that does email, web and other apps is just icing on the cake. By browsing webpages, letting me answer work emails and setting all sorts of settings, the iPhone is a lot more efficient at running my daily schedule than configuring a dozen other devices. Increasing my accessibility to information means reading emails on an elevator and the NYT at the Park Station T platform. Hurray productivity!
Gadgets hold massive depreciation and it’s almost always the rule that a gadget today was worth more yesterday. The hot unlocked iPhone market suggests I could sell my used iPhone at or near retail prices. If I were to wait, the depreciation is likely to be even more severe. While there are many variables that could hinder this plan I think they are relatively minor.
Nerd Plan: Buy 3G iPhone. Sell old iPhone near retail. Anticipated cost difference of $50 to $200.
